My story

Hillbilly's Song

by 인생오십년 2021. 5. 31.

Hillville means poor and marginalized white people living in Rustbelt, a declining industrial zone in the United States. In other words, it means white trash, white trash. It refers to a low-educated, politically conservative American rural white man derived from the fact that his neck is red due to sunburn. In a word, this story is close to the author's memoir. Middletown, around the Appalachian Mountains, where Jackson of Kentucky was the home of grandparents and Middletown, Ohio. Most of them fall into low-class workers, drug addiction, and so on.

Reading his childhood stories makes me cry. The United States is the richest country in the world, and at least white people thought they lived well, which shows the back side of that huge country. The author was born in 1984 and grew up seeing Presidents Obama, Reagan, and Clinton. The bigger problem in that environment is how the mother was ruined by drug addiction and family discord that prevailed in the society, and even in it, she barely endured with the care of her grandmother, a string of hope. Of course, the grandparents' discord also plays a part in the mother's ruin. My mother was a smart enough student to speak in front of the audience at the high school graduation ceremony, but she got pregnant and gave birth to her older sister. It led to drug addiction. You can also see how a harmonious family life can greatly help your children's growth. It took a lot of time for the author to understand it.

You can also see the shadow of the social security system. You can never make yourself self-reliant with subsidies. The fact that those who receive government subsidies live richer than those who barely work through a day's meal of work make the author angry. Perhaps in such a situation, the author would have lived a pathetic life like other children in the region, addicted to drugs without the care of his grandmother. Still, I was fortunate that my mother's numerous male fathers all did well to him. If one of the wheels of his destiny went wrong, he would not have been here. After graduating from high school, he tried to go to Ohio State University, but due to problems such as tuition, he supported the Marines and dispatched troops to Iraq, but did not participate in the war.

This book tells us a lot. Maybe we can't blame the environment and there are things we can't do because we devalue ourselves. Another important thing is that there is no intelligence and no knowledge. He had a knowledge and had no knowledge, so he tried to push his limits and I don't know if that was possible.
