The reason why LG Energy Solution's cylindrical battery works well is that it is a battery type that Tesla, the No. 1 electric vehicle company with higher stability, better profitability, and the most important, is pushing for it. Tesla has received 21,700 batteries from Panasonic and LG Energy Solutions from Model 3 production and mounted them on Tesla's models, and continues to run the world's No. 1 without any major accidents. It is still the world's No. 1 electric vehicle producer, and production is increasing every year due to its unique branding.



Due to Tesla's infinite speed, LG Energy Solution's cylindrical battery sales and operating profit are rapidly increasing, and it is tying up the deficit in pouch-type batteries. The biggest advantage of cylindrical batteries is that they have lower production prices, higher productivity, and lower prices than pouch-type batteries, so Tesla launched cylindrical batteries as a standard for electric vehicles early on.

Tesla has adopted and mounted a standard cylindrical battery of 21700 so far, but Tesla plans to mount a new type of cylindrical battery by declaring the internalization of the battery, which is the 46800 battery.




The 4680 battery, announced on Battery Day in 2020, is a new form factor product that is much more efficient, has more mileage, and is inexpensive than the existing 2170 battery. After all, the 4680 battery is a battery that catches both performance and production cost, and is currently being developed by Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solutions. Tesla's pursuit of such a new form is due to cost.



Only when the price of the battery falls, the price of the electric vehicle can be controlled, and for this purpose, it can be seen that the 4680 battery was developed and internalized. Of course, it is difficult to internalize and supply all batteries, so it is believed that a cell maker has requested it, and if the 4680 battery is actually mass-produced, it could eat up the existing 2170 battery market.



The 4680 battery was expected to become a reality and open a new market, but CATL challenged it once again. Perhaps because of Tesla's internalization and the potential of a new form factor, it announced that it would release a new prismatic battery.



It's called "Giraffe Battery".



Against Tesla, CATL announced that it plans to release a product that adopts a third-generation cell-to-pack technology called "Giraffe Battery." It is expected to launch a new standard battery against the 4,680 battery and compete with Tesla for technology.






The third-generation battery technology, Cell to Pack (CTP), is referred to as a giraffe battery in CATL, has the highest market weight and energy density in the industry compared to a conventional battery, and has a performance capable of increasing the charge of the giraffe battery pack by 13%. If CTP 3rd generation technology is mass-produced following China's LFP battery, K battery's competitiveness will be somewhat weakened. Of course, the battery is not yet released, but I think the 4680 battery should be prepared for new technology batteries at this moment when it is about to be released.



In addition, existing LFP batteries were cheaper, but their performance was lower than domestic NCM three-way batteries because the mileage was not long, but I think CATL's technology will offset this. CTP technology, which is scheduled to be released in April next month, is not only counting, but also increasing efficiency in pack technology, so it is worth looking forward to it.
